Pool 8/15 online

  • Races to 3–9 racks
  • FIBiS rules 2024–2028
  • 2.80 m table, narrow pockets

The Italian pocket game ("Pool Shanghai"), on the 2.80 m table with narrow pockets, after the FIBiS rules of play 2024–2028. Fifteen numbered balls racked in a triangle, the 1 at the apex, the 8 and the 15 in the middle of the fourth row. One player takes the solids (2–8), the other the stripes (9–15), also called low and high; the 1 belongs to nobody. The 8 and the 15 count only in the side pockets, one in each. Clear your group, then pocket the 1 in the pocket you called to win the rack. Matches are races: first to win N racks.

It plays straight away in your browser, with nothing to download. To play without a connection too, download and install it as an app, on phone, tablet and computer: free, and without going through an app store.

Pool 8/15 rules

Scoring

  • 1The 1Once your group is cleared, call a pocket (always, even when it is obvious) and pocket the 1 there to win the rack. You may also call it with your last ball, to pot both on one shot: if the 1 stays up, the turn passes
  • 8·15Side pocketsThe 8 and the 15 count only in the side pockets, in opposite ones: one is taken, the other is left for the other ball. Anywhere else they are spotted near a short cushion
  • +Keep shootingPocket one of your balls on a legal shot and you stay at the table. The 1 pocketed while nobody has cleared their group is spotted, and you stay too

Fouls

After a foul the shot is undone: the balls go back where they were, what dropped is spotted, and the opponent has ball in hand on the linea di acchito (a 20 cm stretch of the head string). There is no cushion rule.

Wrong ball first
The cue ball touches a ball of the other group first, the 1 before your group is cleared, or no ball at all. Once you are on the 1, it must be the first ball touched.
Cue ball in a pocket
Everything stays where it stopped and the group balls that dropped count; ball in hand for the opponent.
Ball off the table
Any ball, the cue ball too: the balls go back as they were, but your opponent’s balls that dropped stay down.
Carrozza
The cue ball touching one of your balls: shoot away from it, at 90° or more. Into it is a foul (into an opponent’s ball, the wrong ball first).
Jump
The cue ball jumps over a ball on its way to the first one it touches.
Three in a row
Three fouls in a row, each with a ball to hit in plain sight, lose the rack; a foul with no ball in sight does not count, and only a legal shot starts the count again. After the second you are warned: last chance.

The break, the groups and the 1

  • Breaks alternate. The cue ball goes on the linea di acchito and must hit the 1 first; the break must pocket a ball or drive at least three balls to a cushion. If not, or on a foul, the opponent breaks a new rack. After a good break the breaker keeps shooting.
  • Balls pocketed on the break stay down but give no group; the 1, the 8 and the 15 are spotted.
  • From the first shot after the break, the first ball legally pocketed gives you its group; if balls of both groups drop, you choose. The 8 and the 15 never decide it; on that shot they count only if a group ball was hit first.
  • You lose the rack by pocketing the 1 when it is your opponent’s last ball, by pocketing your own 1 in a pocket you did not call, or with three fouls in a row. Pocket it with the cue ball going in too and you still win; with the cue ball off the table, the balls go back as they were, the 1 too.
  • Balls of the other group that drop stay down, but only your own keep you at the table.
