Pool

14.1 straight pool online

  • Races to 25–150 points
  • WPA rules (2025)
  • 9 ft table, or the 7 ft bar table

Straight pool: fifteen balls, any ball may be played, and every shot is called — a ball and a pocket, or “safety”. Each ball pocketed on a shot whose called ball dropped in the called pocket is a point, and you keep shooting. When one ball is left, the other fourteen are racked again and the run goes on. The first to the target score wins.

Scoring

  • +1A point a ballEvery ball down on a shot where the call was made scores, the called one and any other
  • →Call the shotTap the pocket; the ball aimed at is called unless you tap another in the row of balls, or double-tap it on the table (a combination). Or call a safety
  • 14Re-rackWith one ball left, the other fourteen are racked again (apex empty) and you play on, often breaking them off the last ball

Fouls

A foul costs a point; the opponent plays the cue ball where it lies (after a scratch, from behind the head string). Scores can go below zero.

No cushion
After the contact no ball is pocketed and none reaches a cushion (or no ball is hit at all).
Scratch
The cue ball goes into a pocket or off the table.
Ball off the table
An object ball jumps off the table: it is spotted.
From the kitchen
With the cue ball in hand behind the head string, a ball behind it may be hit first only once the cue ball has crossed the head string. With every ball behind it, you may have the nearest one spotted.
Three fouls in a row
The third foul in a row costs 15 more points, and the offender breaks a new rack under the opening rules.

The opening break, and balls spotted

  • The opening break is played from behind the head string, usually called a safety (you may call a ball instead): either a called ball drops, or the cue ball and two object balls must each reach a cushion. Otherwise it is a breaking foul: −2, and the opponent plays the table or has the breaker break again.
  • Balls pocketed on a safety, on a foul or without the call made come back to the foot spot, and so does any ball off the table.
  • When the last ball or the cue ball lies where the fourteen are racked, the last ball goes to the head spot, or the cue ball behind the head string, as the WPA rules say.

The official rules

The rules above are the ones Biliardo Plus applies in a match, in short, and they are in the game too, in the Rules window. The full text is the federation’s (in Italian for FIBiS):
